DASH Program Delivers Strong Results

A major effort to remove Eurasian watermilfoil (EWM) from Gilmore Lake took place August 3–7, targeting multiple locations in the Southern and Middle Basins.

Divers hand-pull Eurasian watermilfoil below the surface, while the DASH system uses suction hoses to transport the removed plants onto the boat for collection and disposal.

A professional crew from Aquatic Plant Management LLC of Minocqua, Wisconsin, operated the DASH (Diver-Assisted Suction Harvesting) boat and equipment, removing EWM from targeted areas of the lake.

Kevin and Hope Smith were among the volunteers who collected Eurasian watermilfoil fragments during the DASH program.

The effort received tremendous support from GLA members, with 27 volunteers helping collect floating plants, wade shorelines, and hand-pull EWM. By the end of the week, the combined effort had removed 100 large bags of aquatic plants from the lake.

The strong volunteer turnout made the DASH project a great example of how members can contribute directly to GLA's ongoing EWM control efforts.
